In April 2017, the FDA announced that the agency had issued a warning about sildenafil. The FDA is now considering whether to alert consumers to the increased risks.
“It is a dangerous drug,” O’Reilly said, adding that he was concerned that sildenafil could increase the risk of heart problems, and therefore it would increase the risk of heart attack.
In addition, he said, there are risks to the health of people taking sildenafil, including the potential for serious adverse effects, such as a prolonged, painful erection lasting more than 4 hours, a sudden decrease or loss of vision or hearing, an allergic reaction, or a serious skin reaction.
“Sildenafil is a prescription medication that should never be taken by anyone who is elderly or who has certain medical conditions,” O’Reilly said. “Sildenafil should not be taken by people who are pregnant or may become pregnant, and we are working with health care professionals to educate and help patients avoid unnecessary, potentially harmful use of this drug.”
